This is my thank you letter to all DJs worldwide.
Immense practice, sacrifice, and ingenuity has allowed for the explosion of many music genres as well as the curation/preservation of a people’s history. With this dedication we have seen, in this generation, music and lifestyles from all over the world from Africa to Mexico, before unimaginable to a lot of audiences. Afrobeat, salsa, cumbia, hip hop, electronic styles have become one through the DJ and, I’m not saying it’s goneĀ under appreciated, but could definitely always be recognized as a cornerstone of the transnational lifestyle music lovers enjoy so conveniently. The facilitation of a dance club, wedding (sorry some of y’all gotta do that one..heh), family gathering, house party, or just a BBQ is not an easy task but has become one of the most sought after roles that a few pour their heart into to make sure it is done right. Many of my greatest and worst memories as a child up until now—and I’m sure for long in the future—have and will be made thanks to the sound selector acting as the backbone in a voyage. I would not like to glorify the role of the DJ either because, as with anything, there is room for insincerity and many will take advantage of such an opportunity; so a fat “c’mon son” to the sucka DJ. I am excited to be witness to such an evolution of what we know as the DJ as she/he is now a sound selector, beat maker, crate digger, and mic controller—embodying the very creative and liberated roots of what it means to rock a crowd. Thank you DJs.
